Cambodia
Cambodia is a small
beautiful kingdom that has one of the
richest cultures in Asia and offers a
range of unique attractions. Phnom
Penh, one of the loveliest of the former
French colonial cities, is the capital.
But it is Siem Reap that is the base for
exploring Angkor Wat, the largest
concentration of religious monuments in
the world. Scattered over 50 sq.
miles it consists of walled cities and
reservoirs. Built between the 9th
& 13th centuries by the mighty Khmer
Empire, its jungle setting gives a
mystical and spiritual grandeur.
Laos
Laos is a
forgotten land-locked country in south
East Asia, a land of mountains, rivers
and forest this is home to colourful
hill tribes who retain much of their
ancient culture and lifestyle.
Designated a World Heritage site by
UNESCO in 1995 the city Luang Prabang is
surrounded by forested mountains and the
Mekong and Nam rivers, old villas,
temples and civic buildings nestle among
palms and tropical foliage as though the
city is one big garden. Just along
the Mekong are the Pak Ou Caves where
thousands of gold lacquered Buddha
statues are crammed into caves carved
out of a towering limestone cliff.
Myanmar
Myanmar, or
Burma as it used to be known, has been
one of the least accessible countries in
the world until very recently. As
a result it is relatively untainted by
the excesses of modern life and retains
an aura of a bygone era. Covered
mostly by mountains and jungle there are
no less than 135 ethnic groups living in
the country. The capital of
Yangon, can trace its history back about
2500 years when the Shwedagon Pagoda was
built with its giant golden dome and
stupa dominating the city skyline.
After the Anglo-Burmese War, the British
helped rebuild the city using a
Victorian grid pattern of geometrical
symmetry. The mix of British
colonialism and Myanmar Buddhism shaped
a city of lakes and parks, of legendary
pagodas, museums and tree-shaded
boulevards. There are also
bustling markets, art and craft shops,
antique dealers, temples and
monasteries.
Vietnam
Vietnam is a
beautiful country stretching 1600kms up
the eastern Chinese Peninsula that
offers images of conical hats emerging
from green rice paddy fields, grainy
black and white photographs of slender,
dark-haired women in flowing white ao
dai tunics, stunning white-sand beaches
fringed with coconut palms, luxurious
resorts and golf courses. Dalat, a
summer retreat in colonial times, with
its green rolling hills misty lakes and
fragrant pine forests, is one of
Vietnam's most romantic destinations.
Nha Trang is a place of soft white sand,
surrounded by warm, turquoise waters
filled with an abundance of sea life and
dotted with islands. Its backdrop
is mountains providing beautiful
picturesque scenery.
