Stretching from
legendary volcanic highlands to the exotic
tropical coastline and the spice island of
Zanzibar - Tanzania is the Africa you have
dreamed of. It has more national parks
than any other country in Africa and an
unrivaled diversity of wildlife. The
ethnic wealth of its numerous tribes makes
for a diverse mosaic of cultures within its
borders, each with their own language,
customs and dress. From the
distinctive reds of the Masai Warriors
herding their cattle across the northern
plains of Ngorongoro and the clicking
hunter-gather tribe of the Hadzabe to the
veiled Arab women scurrying through the
narrow labyrinths of Zanzibar's Stone Town,
there is a unique experience awaiting you
around every corner. A nation of warm
and hospitable people, this is where you can
discover the passion and romance of the
African wilderness, stand daunted at the
foot of Kilimanjaro and experience the
mystery and enchantment of an age gone by. |
|
Lying at
the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro are some of the world's best reserves:
Ngorongoro - designated as a world
heritage site this conservation area is home to the famous volcanic
Ngorongoro crater which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world.
The crater floor consists of a number of ecological environments that
include grassland, swamps, forests and Lake Makat, a central soda lake
filled by the Munge River. All these various habitats attract
various wildlife to drink, wallow, graze, hide or climb. Although
animals are free to move in and out of the contained environment, both
grazers and predators are inclined to remain. This is undoubtedly
the best place in Tanzania to see the black rhino and prides of lions
that include the magnificent black-maned males.

Serengeti -- this park has
endless rolling plains reaching up the the
Kenyan border and extending almost to Lake
Victoria. The park is teeming with
magnificent wildlife -- it is thought
that over 3 million large mammals roam the
plains with over 500 species of bird, plus
crocodiles, snakes and lizards. In May
or early June the Great Migration takes
place when the wildebeest, zebra and gazelle
search for water and greener pastures. |
| The
Tarangire National Park
supports its own wildlife community
because of the permanent waters of the
Tarangire River. It is home to
thousands of elephants and in the dry season
game congregates along the river having
migrated from the Masai Mara. |
