The name Singapore
came from the Sanskit words singa and pura -
singa meaning lion and pura meaning city.
Formerly known as Temasek, legend has it
that during the 14th century a Sri Vijayan
prince encountered a lion upon setting foot
in the island, believing the sighting to be
an auspicious omen, the elated prince
immediately gave the island its new name. |

Singapore is now a vibrant destination where you can
experience the modern and multicultural face of Asia. A melting pot of
cultures, religions, dress and cuisine all combine to form the Singapore way of
life. Food can be inexpensive from an out door eating stall or
international cuisine in one of the fine dining restaurants. Taste the
uniqueness of Singapore and try their famous Black Pepper or Chilli Crabs or
Laksa, the national dish, which consists of rice noodles, shrimps, cockles, fish
cake and chili paste in a thick coconut-based broth. Or step back in time
and take breakfast or just tea at Chin Mee Chin's confectionary, full of
nostalgia, olde-worlde charm, mouth-watering pastries and aroma's reminisant of
a bygone age. |

Shopping varies from market stalls to designer shops
and entertainment has something for everyone, from Indian movies to lively
discotheques and heritage museums to hi-tech theme parks. Singapore may be
small but it is full of interesting places to see and things to do. You
can explore the busy streets of Chinatown, see the old Muslim district or stroll
through little India. Or visit the Science Centre; Jurong Bird Park;
Sentosa Island with Underwater World; Volcano Land; Snow City and Escape Theme
Park. For something completely different try 'Ghostbusting' with the
Singapore Paranormal Investigators. Their tours include 3 of Singapore's
creepiest sites and are sure to give you a spine-chilling thrill! |
