Situated in the
hills north of Denpasar, Ubud is the serene
cultural centre of Bali, hosting a large number of interesting galleries, many
with quality works of art, whilst just to the south the village of
Mas is the centre for wood carving, the main streets are flanked by
shops and stalls selling a vast array of beautiful sculptures of every shape and
size. Kuta is unbeatable for clothing and
also sports the liveliest nightlife.
This island's rich cultural heritage is visible everywhere - in over 20,000
temples and palaces, in many colourful festivals and ceremonies, in drama, music
and dance. Then there are the water sports with something for everyone
from the very active to the more sedate.
