Myanmar or Burma as
it used to be known has been one of the
least accessible countries in the world
until recently. as a result it is
relatively untainted by the excesses of
modern life and retains an aura of a bygone
era. covered mostly by mountains and
jungles there are no less than 135 ethnic
groups living in the country. |

The most
popular destinations to visit are Yangon, the
former Rangoon of colonial times where the Shedagon Pagoda built around
2500 years ago with its giant golden done and stupa dominate the
capitals skyline. There are plenty of other attractions in the
city, ranging from bustling markets, art and craft shops and antique
dealers to temples and monasteries. Trips to local villages
specialising in local crafts are also available. |

Mandalay a former capital with a rich
cultural past has amongst its religious
sites the Mahamuni Pagoda, famous for its
gold leafed covered Buddha statue and the
Kuthodaw Pagoda nicknamed 'the world's
biggest book' with its 729 white marble
slabs of Buddhist scriptures. |
| The magnificent
archeological site of Bagan,
690 kms north of Yangon, used to be one of
the great Buddhist centres of South East
Asia. Scattered over an arid plain by
the banks of the Ayeyarwady River are some
3000 pagodas and temples dating from the
11th to the 13th century. Mount Popa
located about 50 kms south east of Bagan and
rising to 1518 metres above sea level, is a
steep sided volcanic peak. The most
magical of Myanmar's mountains is was formed
by a powerful earthquake in 442 AD and has
been a place of pilgrimage for over 700
years. |
