A land of truly
amazing contrasts stretching along the coast
of the Mediterranean for some 250
kilometers. With the Cedar Mountains,
fertile plains, Islamic architecture,
ancient sites from Phoenician, Greek and
Roman times, snow skiing in the mountains
and water skiing on the coast, together with
a lively night life, traditional souks and
excellent restaurants, Lebanon with its
kindly climate, has all the ingredients for
a perfect holiday.

Beirut, once called the 'Paris of the East' due to
the opulence of the city, is the capital of Lebanon. Pigeon Rocks
are the most famous natural feature of the city, these offshore rock
arches are a lovely compliment to the dramatic sea cliffs, also
wandering the corniche and the old souks is a must for any visitor.

Byblos, one of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world,
dating back some 5000 years, was a
flourishing port in Phoenician times and the
site of a crusader castle and church, it has
a historic harbour as well as some Byzantine
ruins.

Tripoli, with its narrow alleys,
souks and Mameluk architecture retains an
air of special Arabic charm, complemented by
its slow pace of life and friendly people.
Baalbeck is home to the acropolis,
one of the largest in the world with two
temples, two courtyards and an enclosure.
The temples of Jupiter, Bacchus and Venus
all bear testimony to the time when the
Romans held this city as the centre of their
Syrian Empire. |

historic sites in Lebanon, tours can be
arranged to include as many or as few as you
want. The following is an example of a
4 night / 5 day tour. |
Day 1
Arrive Beirut
Day 2
Take a tour of the capital and surrounding
area, sights to see include: Pigeons Rocks,
the huge offshore rock formations; the
Corniche, with its beaches, cafes and shops;
the city centre and the Beirut National
Museum. Then en-route to the Chouf
Mountains visit Deir El Qamar, the ancient
residence of the Governors of Lebanon, and
Beiteddine, where you can see superb
examples of Lebanese architecture from the
18th and 19th century, including a museum
and an exhibition of mosaics.
Day 3
Today see the northern region.
Discover Harissa, take a cable car up to the
statue of Notre Dame, then continue to
Lebanon's second city Tripoli. Here
visit St. Gilles Castle and the Taylan
Mosque then enjoy a walk through the souk.
Continue to Byblos, one of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world,
there you can visit the Citadel, St. John's
Church built by the Crusaders and the
historic harbour.
Day 4
Drive across Mount Lebanon then descent
towards the Bequaa Valley to reach one of
the world's greatest historic sites,
Baalbeck. Baalbeck's temple complex is
one of the largest in the world, it has the
temple of Jupiter, completed about 60AD and
the Temple of Bacchus built around 150AD and
is amazingly well preserved. Next
visit Ksara winery and then proceed to Anjar
to visit the excavated Ommayyad site
recognised to be one of the major market
places on the Silk Road.

Ski Lebanon
Lebanon has six ski
resorts with groomed sloped, catering for
skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
There are also trails for cross-country
skiing and snowshoeing. Each of the
ski resorts is different, Faraya-Mzaar is
the biggest and caters for all levels, The
Cedars is an area of outstanding beauty and
Laqloug is ideal for families up to
intermediate level. |
