Since time
immemorial Jordan has been a crossroads for
migrating peoples, invading armies and
international trade. With a history
dating back over two millennia, the country
teems with mementoes including walled
Canaanite cities, Byzantine churches and
monasteries, Crusader castles, Biblical
sites, Greek and Roman palaces, Muslim
shrines, the huge Roman city of Jerash and
the lost city of Petra. With the
stunning lunar landscape of Wadi Rum and the
health spas of the Dead Sea, Jordan is a
fascinating country to visit. |
|
Amman, the capital is
a cosmopolitan city, yet only a short ride away from a very different world
where Arab style houses cling precariously to the city's seven hills. |
|
 |
Jerash, to the
north of the capital is undoubtedly one
of the world's best preserved Graeco-Roman
cities. Triumphant arches, ornate
pillars, intricate mosaics and a 5000
seat amphitheatre remain beautifully
intact, and then of course there is
Petra, a World
Heritage site, built more than 2000
years ago. Reached through a
narrow gorge that winds and twists
between 100 metre high cliffs are
magnificent tombs and temples hewn from
the solid pink rock. |
 |
| The
Dead Sea, the
lowest point on the earth's surface, is a
landlocked salt lake that has drawn visitors
since ancient times with its warm, soothing
waters reputed to ease rheumatism and
arthritis and its therapeutic black mud said
to be good for the complexion.
Visitors should also not miss the
opportunity to visit some of the many
medieval desert castles dotted throughout
the terrain of east Jordan and the central
hills, whose galleries and ramparts recall
the daring of bygone crusaders. |
